Who We Are
At Mizar we are scientists working with scientists. We focus on designing and manufacturing new scientific equipment to advance science.
We are headquartered in Woods Hole, MA (USA) at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL). Our founder, Paul Maddox, is a Whitman Scientist and course director for the Analytical and Quantitative Light Microscopy (AQLM) course at MBL. Our CEO, Joel Smith, was former director of education and a scientist in several labs (including his own) at MBL. MBL's commitment to the advancement of science, coupled with these strong ties led to Mizar's decision to headquarter there.
Our History
Mizar's story is about Paul's love for science and his wife. Amy Shaub Maddox, Paul's wife, needed a light sheet for imaging cytokinesis at high frames rates. There was nothing on the market for her needs, so Paul & Tanner Fadero (Paul's PhD student) set out to build a copy of the Eric Betzig Bessel beam based light sheet system. Out of this necessity and love, the Tilt was created. To read more about this story, read the blog post.
